India’s Private Space Sector Marks Historic Milestone with Successful Vikram-1 Launch
Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched the Vikram-1 rocket from Sriharikota, marking the first time a privately developed Indian vehicle has reached orbit. The mission represents a significant advancement for India's commercial space capabilities and small satellite launch market.
India’s space sector reached a historic milestone this Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket, marking the first time a privately developed Indian vehicle has achieved orbit. The launch, which took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island, saw the rocket reach a target altitude of approximately 280 miles (450 kilometers) following a successful ascent from the Bay of Bengal coast.

The mission, which faced a brief delay due to a technical issue during the final countdown, proceeded to deploy its three solid-fueled stages before a liquid-fueled fourth stage finalized the orbital insertion. According to Ars Technica, the rocket achieved an orbital velocity of approximately 17,000 mph. While minor observations were noted regarding the separation of the third and fourth stages, the vehicle successfully reached its intended 60-degree inclination, a feat confirmed by US military tracking data.
Standing 72 feet tall, the Vikram-1 is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit. This capability positions the vehicle as a competitor in the growing global market for small satellite launches, comparable in scale to established international counterparts like Rocket Lab’s Electron. The debut flight carried a variety of technology demonstration payloads, including contributions from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, and DCubed, alongside artistic installations.

Reflecting on the achievement, Skyroot co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana described the success as a dream realized, noting the rarity of achieving orbital flight on a maiden attempt. Historically, many global aerospace firms have required multiple attempts to reach this stage, making the Vikram-1’s performance a notable entry for the Indian private sector.
This launch underscores the evolving landscape of India’s space industry, which has traditionally been dominated by the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). By successfully demonstrating the viability of commercial orbital launch services, Skyroot Aerospace has signaled a shift toward a more diversified space economy. As the company moves forward, the data gathered from this flight will be instrumental in refining future missions and establishing a regular cadence for commercial satellite deployment from Indian soil.
