Nvidia Unveils Blackwell-Powered RTX 50-Series GPUs

Nvidia has officially announced its next-generation RTX 50-series graphics cards, featuring the Blackwell architecture and significant performance improvements. The new lineup ranges from the flagship RTX 5090 to the entry-level RTX 5070, with availability beginning in late January.

Nvidia has officially unveiled its next-generation RTX 50-series graphics cards, marking a significant transition to the Blackwell architecture. Announced by CEO Jensen Huang at CES, the new lineup includes four distinct models: the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. This launch represents a major push to redefine high-end gaming and compute performance, with the flagship RTX 5090 priced at $1,999 and the RTX 5080 at $999, both scheduled for release on January 30th, followed by the 5070-series in February according to The Verge.

The technical foundation of these cards centers on the integration of GDDR7 memory and the Blackwell architecture, which Nvidia claims will deliver substantial performance gains over the previous generation. The RTX 5090, for instance, boasts 32GB of GDDR7 memory and 21,760 CUDA cores. A notable design shift is the physical footprint of the 5090 Founders Edition, which has been reduced to a two-slot form factor, allowing for compatibility with smaller PC cases despite its high-performance specifications. To support these capabilities, the cards utilize PCIe Gen 5 and DisplayPort 2.1b connectors, enabling support for displays up to 8K at 165Hz.

Performance metrics provided by Nvidia suggest that the RTX 5090 is capable of running demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 at 238fps with DLSS 4 enabled, compared to 106fps on the previous-generation RTX 4090 using DLSS 3.5. However, these performance leaps come with increased power requirements. The RTX 5090 carries a total graphics power rating of 575 watts, necessitating a recommended 1000-watt power supply. The RTX 5080, meanwhile, features 16GB of GDDR7 memory and a 360-watt power draw, with a recommended 850-watt power supply.

As the market evaluates these new offerings, the focus remains on whether the performance-per-watt efficiency will justify the significant power consumption and price points. While the Blackwell architecture promises to set a new standard for ray tracing and AI-driven frame generation, the hardware requirements for the top-tier models will likely necessitate substantial system upgrades for many enthusiasts. The success of the 50-series will ultimately depend on how these cards perform in real-world scenarios outside of controlled demonstrations, particularly as competitors continue to iterate on their own GPU architectures.
