Flash floods in Jammu claim 11 lives as major pilgrimages are suspended

Heavy rainfall and cloudburst-like conditions have triggered severe flash floods and landslides across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and leaving several individuals missing. In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, the administration has taken the precautionary measure of suspending both the Amarnath and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi yatras. According to Firstpost, the Amarnath Yatra was halted on July 19 following adverse weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department. Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Anshul Garg confirmed that pilgrims are currently restricted from proceeding from the Baltal and Nunwan/Chandanwari base camps until further notice.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has stated that the administration is prioritizing the protection of lives as the situation continues to evolve. In a public statement, the Chief Minister noted that he has been in constant communication with local representatives and MLAs to coordinate relief efforts. Rescue teams are currently deployed in Rajouri, where they are searching for missing persons and assisting residents stranded by the rising waters. The flooding has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including homes and vehicles, prompting a comprehensive assessment of the destruction.
