Heavy Rains and Landslides Trigger Emergency Response Across Jammu and Kashmir
Torrential rainfall has resulted in 28 fatalities across Jammu and Kashmir, prompting the suspension of the Amarnath Yatra and the closure of schools. Authorities have issued high-alert warnings for flash floods and landslides as meteorological forecasts predict continued intense showers through July 23.
Persistent torrential rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir has led to a critical situation, with the death toll reaching 28 over the past 24 hours due to landslides and flash floods. The severe weather has necessitated the suspension of the Amarnath Yatra and the closure of educational institutions as a precautionary measure. According to The Indian Express, the impact of the deluge is widespread, with significant infrastructure damage reported, including the flooding of the iconic Ghanta Ghar in Srinagar.
The most severe casualties occurred in the Poonch and Doda districts, where landslides buried residential structures. In the Loran area of Poonch, seven members of a single family lost their lives, while three others were killed in separate incidents across Doda. The Jammu region, particularly Rajouri and Poonch, has faced the brunt of the flash floods, which have swept away homes and left several individuals missing.
In response to the crisis, the Jammu and Kashmir government has placed all key departments on high alert. Official advisories have urged residents to avoid proximity to hill slopes, rivers, and streams, citing the heightened risk of mudslides and rising water levels. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted continued intense showers through July 23, with specific warnings for extremely heavy rainfall in the Reasi and Udhampur districts.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 6 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased individual. This compensation package includes Rs 4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund and an additional Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s relief fund. While the administration works to provide immediate support to affected families, the focus remains on disaster mitigation and the safety of residents in vulnerable, high-altitude areas. The ongoing weather pattern, which saw Rajouri record 92.5 mm of rainfall in a single day, continues to pose a significant challenge to regional stability and public safety.
