Assam Floods Disrupt Rail Connectivity as Infrastructure Faces Severe Inundation
Severe flooding in Assam has forced the Northeast Frontier Railway to cancel, divert, or short-terminate over 30 trains due to submerged tracks. Operations remain suspended in critical sections as authorities prioritize passenger safety amid rising water levels.
The ongoing monsoon deluge in Assam has significantly impacted critical transport infrastructure, with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announcing the cancellation, diversion, and short-termination of more than 30 trains. The disruption follows intense rainfall that has led to the submergence of the Simaluguri station yard, surrounding railway colonies, and essential track segments.

According to Kapinjal K Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer for NFR, the decision to halt services was necessitated by the need to ensure passenger safety and address operational hazards caused by water flowing over the tracks in the Simaluguri section as reported by The Indian Express. Consequently, train movement between the Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat sections has been suspended until further notice.
To mitigate the impact on long-distance connectivity, railway authorities have diverted several trains originating from or bound for Dibrugarh and Tinsukia via the Rangiya-Rangapara-Dibrugarh route. While these diversions aim to maintain essential transit links, the suspension of local passenger services remains a significant challenge for commuters in the affected regions.
